Frequently Asked Question
RITUXAN is not chemotherapy. RITUXAN is a type of antibody therapy that can be used alone or with chemotherapy. They work in different ways to find and attack the cells where cancer starts. RITUXAN targets and attaches to the CD20 protein found on the surface of blood cells with cancer and some healthy blood cells.
Rituximab has since been approved for use in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, follicular lymphoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. … As an immunotherapy, rituximab is already a “personalized therapeutic” because patients whose tumors express higher levels of CD20 are expected to receive greater benefit from rituximab use.
- Combining rituximab with cisplatin or amphotericin B increases the risk of kidney failure.
- The combination of certolizumab pegol with rituximab may increase immune suppression and risk of infections.
Cytoxan and many of the cytotoxic chemotherapy medications work by killing rapidly reproducing cells. This affects the cells of the gut and hair follicles which rapidly reproduce and can cause hair loss and nausea in some people. Rituximab does not work in this way, and therefore should not cause hair loss or nausea.
